Wall tiles are used on walls. Get rid of that stuff, put down 3/4 plywood and you will have to put a 1/2 backer board or cement board on top of that. I wouldn't want to gamble with mastic over plywood.

You can tile over some of these surfaces if you have an appropriate underlayment in between them and the tile.

Either backerboard or concrete board is fine, but i'd recommend backerboard on the wall it probably doesn't matter, but i would (and did) use backerboard on the floor over plywood. It might be done to create a subfloor for ceramic tile to be installed over an existing wood subfloor or for making a concrete countertop.
